Motor Trend’s 2005 Truck of the Year

The 2005 Toyota Tacoma, the eighth generation of Toyota’s original compact pickup, delivers both comfort and practicality. Toyota has managed to add size and power while improving maneuverability, fuel economy, ride comfort, and handling. No wonder, then, that the Tacoma was named the 2005 Motor Trend Truck of the Year.

“The new Tacoma is a good example of Toyota listening to its customers and delivering the best materials, fit and finish for its price class,” says Angus MacKenzie, Motor Trend’s editor-in-chief. “Buyers get Toyota’s legendary durability and quality in a beautifully built little truck.”

Key Facts: 2005 Toyota Tacoma
• A reputation for rugged durability
• Larger, more spacious cabin
• Larger, more powerful engines
• Comfortable, car-like ride
• 18 configurations and 4 body styles

Size and style

With 18 configurations of four distinct body styles, the Tacoma has a model to fit anyone’s needs, style and budget. As to size, the Tacoma is now nearly six inches longer, two inches taller and nearly four inches wider than the 2004. And it now shares the same underpinnings as the Toyota 4Runner and Lexus GX470 sport-utility vehicles. For 2005, Tacoma offers a choice of two bed lengths. The regular and Access Cab models come with the 73.5'' long bed. For the first time, Double Cab models will be offered with a choice of a 60.3'' short bed as well as the 73.5'' bed.

In addition to being longer and wider, the new Tacoma is also quieter. Aerodynamic improvements designed to help reduce wind noise, and additional sound dampening materials in the headliner, on the floor and behind the rear seats combine to allow for driving in quiet comfort.

Under the hood

Two new engines are available in the 2005 Toyota Tacoma. A 164-horsepower, 2.7-liter inline four-cylinder powers most of the regular and extended cab models. And an impressive new 245-horse, 4.0-liter V6 is standard on X-Runner and Double Cab models. This V6 engine, which has EPA fuel-mileage  estimates of 18 city/22 highway, can pull up to a 6,500-pound trailer.

The new Tacoma’s suspension delivers a ride as good as many passenger cars. The X-Runner package raises street performance higher still.

Dual-stage front airbags are standard on all Tacomas. Side-impact airbags for torso-protection, and side-curtain airbags for head protection—which have been shown to significantly reduce fatalities in broadside collisions—are options on Tacoma Double Cabs.

With the new Tacoma, Toyota has improved the ride, handling and passenger space without sacrificing cargo or towing capacity. All told, this comfortable and spacious pickup just might convince many SUV and car owners who never thought they’d own a pickup as their primary vehicle to make the Tacoma their top choice.
