Helping Parents Choose a retirement Lifestyle

For many older adults, there comes a time to consider the benefits of moving to a retirement community. The initial discussion may be driven by issues such as safety or security, or the hassles and responsibilities of home maintenance, or a desire to travel more, or not wanting to become a burden on their children. Whatever the reason, the issues and challenges associated with aging are very real. And the choices are many.
Adult children of aging parents can help facilitate the dialogue of examining senior-living options. A recent USA Today/ABC News/Gallup Poll of baby boomers found that 41 percent are providing care for an aging parent, 37 percent expect to do so in the near future, and millions more “are calling regularly, flying into [the parent’s] town every month, or just stopping by to take Mom or Dad to the doctor.”
Paula Preston, marketing manager for Oakmonte Village at Lake Mary, isn’t surprised by these statistics. “Many of today’s adults are caught in the middle—with children either still at home or just beginning their own lives . . . and parents who are starting the ‘next chapter’ of theirs,” she says.
According to Preston, there are several key factors to consider when helping parents decide on the right retirement lifestyle:
Cost Make sure you’re aware of all the associated costs. Check out the entrance fees and monthly fees, and make a list of what’s included and what isn’t. Keep in mind that rental communities offer more financial flexibility than those requiring expensive buy-ins.
Service and Amenities Today’s seniors are looking for more options and choices in retirement communities. Fitness and spa services, fine dining, continued learning programs and social opportunities are important factors to consider.
Convenience To avoid the stress of travel, find a community that’s close to you and also convenient to medical facilities, doctors’ offices, houses of worship, shopping and entertainment.
Future needs While healthcare may not be an issue right now, odds are that it will be at some point. Find out what resources the community offers or plans to put in place for assisted living or memory support. S
